Today Florida State got some great news out of the transfer portal. Former Clemson and current Oregon State quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei has committed to play for our beloved Seminoles in his final year of collegiate eligibility.
Let me be clear, this is a great get for FSU. It is not fair to DJU to solely evaluate him from his time at Clemson. Since DJU transferred to Oregon State, Clemson fired the offensive coordinator he played for and the offensive line coach. It was clear that DJU was not being properly developed at Clemson. A fair judgment of DJU also includes last season at Oregon State.
DJU looked like a completely different QB at Oregon State. He threw for over 2,600 yards, 21 touchdowns , and 7 interceptions. One stat in particular that jumped out at me was that he was 12th among all eligible starting quarterbacks in quarterback rating (QBR). That is quite the turnaround from his days at Clemson.
I have tremendous respect for Jonathan Smith and his offensive staff. They deserve all the credit for helping DJU play more like his ballyhooed recruiting ranking.
I am confident that Coach Norvell and his staff can do even more to unlock DJU’s full potential. In my eyes, the quarterback room will be in good hands with DJU. Congrats to Coach Norvell and his staff for landing an excellent piece in the transfer portal.
