FSU Football: Elijah Herring Commits!
Former Tennessee and Memphis linebacker elects to spend his final year of collegiate eligibility with the Seminoles.
When it comes to talent acquisition, the Florida State coaching staff have been all gas and no brakes since the Florida game. Today is no different as former Tennessee and Memphis linebacker Elijah Herring has elected to transfer to Florida State. The 6’2 230 pound rising senior is from Newnan, Georgia.
What do Florida State fans need to know about Elijah Herring? Not to keep beating a dead horse, but production. Florida State has made it a priority this off-season to target proven production, and the acquisition of Herring is no different. Herring had a total of 60 tackles, eight of them going for a loss. Herring also recorded 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble. He even broke up four passes in coverage.
Herring’s PFF grades this season reflect his strengths as a player. He excels at stopping the run as evidenced by his 87.3 PFF grade in that area. Herring posted average PFF grades in tackling (65.2) and in rushing the passer(63.4). However, his coverage grade was below average at 55.9.
For Herring to reach his full potential, he must become more consistent overall as a player. Herring had a missed tackle rate of 16% which could be better. However, I believe that this is something Coach Papuchis can fix. Hopefully, he can also coach Herring up in pass rushing and coverage as well. Herring played well in these areas at times, but a more consistent effort will be needed in order for Florida State to make a dramatic turnaround.
Regardless, this is a good take by the coaching staff and Herring will raise the floor of the linebacker room. Go Noles!
