The Renegade Report Exclusive 1 on 1 Series Debut!
I had an amazing conversation with brand new Florida State Tribe23 long-snapper and Maclay High-School alumnus Peyton Naylor. Join along and get to know an amazing student athlete and third generation 'Nole!
Renegade Report | “In your interview with Alison Posey you mentioned Florida State was your dream school and it took you all of twenty minutes to decide once the offer was made. That had to be an amazing moment; I’m curious when you knew growing up FSU was your favorite team?”
Peyton Naylor | “I've lived in Tallahassee my whole life and my grandma, dad, and uncle all graduated from there so it's pretty much been built into my mind that the 'Noles are the best in the business.
The tradition when I was little was also huge, hearing eighty thousand people doing the war-chant and doing the chop was awesome.”
Renegade Report | “Wow that's pretty awesome, you’re actually a third generation ‘Nole! I Imagine that phone call or meeting when you finally received the offer from the staff was pretty special! Can you share a little bit of that moment, was it with Coach JP(Jon Papuchis), Norvell...?”
Peyton Naylor | “Coach JP called me and it was actually on Father's Day. He told me that I was the long-snapper they chose to offer me anpreffered walk on spot and I said let me speak with my parents and I'll call you back. I think it was nineteen minutes later that I became a Seminole. It was a super special moment that my parents and I got to share”
I chuckled a bit at his attention to detail, when he subconsionciously corrected my assertion that he called back in twenty with: ‘ I think it was nineteen minutes later….”. Being a longsnapper requires relentless attention to detail and as you’ll hear from Naylor yourself mistakes are not an option.
Renegade Report | Man that is so special, especially given your father’s alma mater status and you being third generation Seminole. You also mentioned how important God and your family is to you in your signing post. As a Greek man myself I'm sure those two things have to be at the very top for Coach Papuchis. Everyone that speak’s about Norvell's staff and the team raves about the family atmosphere. Could you feel that immediately visiting and speaking with current and former special teams guys in your recruitment?
Peyton Naylor | My first game day visit I felt the family aspect between Coach Norvell making sure to say hello to every recruit, to all of the commits coming around and doing some recruiting of their own. When my high school Maclay played Munroe this past season, I got to play against 2024 FSU DL commit Keishawn Mashburn and we talked for thirty minutes after the game. It's a brotherhood between all the players/ future players.
After every practice and before every game, all of the specialists huddle up and say a prayer, and as soon as I saw that, I knew I wanted to call FSU my home.
Keishawn Mashburn is a local six foot, two inch, 280 pound defensive tackle that commited to Seminoles back on July 23 2022. He held no ranking when offered by FSU and he is already a top 100 player in the state of Florida and just so happens be the subject of the very next Renegade Report Exclusive 1 on 1.
Renegade Report | Wow man, that is an amazing answer! I'm so glad to hear that myself quite honestly. It really makes you proud to even be a writer or a fan, and I know Coach Bowden certainly approves. You know the other interview I have lined up is actually with 3☆ DT Keishawn Mashburn and I was debating asking if you guys got to meet when yall squared off both being hometown Seminoles! Since you answered that one, before we wrap up I’m curious what made you enter the extremely specialized world of long-snapping five years ago?
Peyton Naylor | In eighth grade I was on the football team and didn't play, but the Deerlake Bucks needed a long snapper. My head coach Michael Kumar introduced me to John Spradlin, who owns Rocket to the Top Kicking Academy.
Coach Spradlin teaches kickers, punters, and snappers. He met with me during practice one day and basically told me I could be really good one day.
So since my eighth grade season I've been working with him, and he's honestly the reason I love the position so much.
I think another reason I love the position is the lack of recognition. We always say, "If you hear your name, you did something wrong," which is true, so it just gets me in the right mindset to snap the perfect snap every time .
Renegade Report | Yeah I saw you thanked him in your note as well; it sounds like he is a great guy! To stay focused from the eighth grade and all that entail’s mentally and physically, straight through the gauntlet that is high-school, is super impressive. It sounds as if you’re really at home out there under that pressure and haven’t had to hear your name in that regard much the last few years. Thanks so much for the time today. Here’s one more for the road. I heard you are enrolling immediately and will be at the bowl game; do you have a particular goal or timeline you can share for your first year in the program?
Peyton Naylor | I really just hope to earn everything that I receive. I want the starting snapping spot but I also know the amount of work that will come along with that. I'm excited and ready to compete!!
You heard it here folks, PWO Peyton Nayler is already signed, sealed and delivered. He is officially a member of the football team and I expect him to follow in the footsteps of the great longsnappers and preffered walkons from Javien Elliot to Trashaun Ward.
