2023 Scholarship Backs
Sam Singleton not included as he does not arrive until summer semester. Let’s take a look at the five backs that will ne competing/ jockeying for position in a crowded backfield. Coach Johnson has a great variety in this group and t with the offensive line set to take a big step we could see two 1000 yard rushers.
Listed in order of my projected Depth Chart.
Trey Benson - Trey is the hands down #1 running back as we enter spring and I expect him to be much better this year given the time elapsed since his injury. His confidence in the scheme along with an offensive line set to make a big jump in 2023. I predict he will be 2nd team All-ACC or better.
Caziah Holmes - Mr. Holmes is this year’s version of what we had in Trey last year. The key difference being that Caziah has already been here for a year knocking the rust off as the scout team running back in 2022. We have seen very little but from what I saw in the Tour of Duty was a guy with the potential to put it all together. I see him having a season like Trey had and maybe even surpassing 1k yards.
Lawrance Toafili - While I don’t see Toafili ever being the starting RB in Norvell’s offense he is the perfect 3rd down RB. I have just never seen the physicality and pad level necessary to run the ball between the tackles and that is super necessary in this offense. That said he is the perfect compliment in any two back set, as well as having an uncanny ability to run routes out of the backfield and catch the ball like a wide reciever. I can see him with around 500 umyards rushing and 500 yards recieving.
Rodney Hill - When you talk about a complete back your talking about Rodney. He has the potential to be a 3 or 4 down running back for us in the future. He has the requisite speed, acceleration, pad level, and toughness to start for the Noles now to be honest. That said he has some monsters ahead of him. Unfortunately for Trashaun Ward, with his limited break away speed, Hill really does everything he had but with a higher upside. Im sure he will get around 50-75 rush attempts this year, but who knows what can happen in camp; you will definitely wanna keep your eyes on him this spring.
CJ Campbell - Yet another steal of a player with CJ coming in as a preferred walk-on and eventually earning himself a scholarship. I love Campbell as well as the rest of the backs but the fact of there is only one ball and five running backs, soon to be six. I will be watching him closely this Spring to see how he compares. I see him as closer to that 3rd down running back like Toafili. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay at FSU or transfer delending on how the spring goes.
