Florida State head football coach Mike Norvell promised an “immediate, fast fix” to the football program during his press conference after the Florida game. It is safe to say he is making good on his promise in more ways than one.
Zach Blostein of Noles247 reported on Saturday that Colorado Assistant Director of Player Personnel/ High School Relations was expected to be hired by Florida State in an off-field recruiting staff role. Today, Rispress has changed his X profile to reflect he is now at Florida State meaning this will likely be official soon.
What is Florida State getting in Devin Rispress? According to Blostein, Rispress has deep ties to the state of Florida. He is a Tallahassee native who played football at Rickards High School. Rispress also began his coaching career in the Tallahassee area.
He served as an assistant coach at his Alma mater, Godby High School, and at Gadsden County High School in Havana. Rispress was then hired by Florida A&M to be their Director of Recruting in 2022 and served in that role until he left for Colorado in January of this year.
During his time at Florida A&M, they won 21 games against 3 losses and won the HBCU national championship in 2023. I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to say that Rispress played a significant role in landing the talent that elevated Florida A&M to a championship contender.
Blostein also noted in his report that Rispress played an important role in Colorado landing two-thirds of the blue chip recruits they signed. Rispress assisted in the recruitments of Adrian Wilson, Quanell Farrakhan, Antonio Branch, Carde Smith, and Christian Hudson.
That would be two four star wide receivers, a four star defensive back, a four star offensive lineman, and a three star defensive lineman. Those efforts have Colorado leading the Big 12 in overall blue chip recruits signed.
The Florida State fan base has had their attention on the on- field coaching hires and rightfully so after a 2-10 season. That said, the off-field recruiting staff hires are some of the most important ones a head coach can make.
How do the elite programs like Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, and Oregon seemingly stack elite classes on top of one another? As good as the on-field coaches are at those programs when it comes to recruiting, they do not do it alone. The recruiting staff play a significant role in cultivating relationships with recruits and their families. If Florida State truly sees itself as one of the elite programs in college football, these are the hires you have to hit a home run on.
I have full confidence that Rispress can be that type of hire for Florida State. The recruits that he helped Colorado sign were from Florida, Alabama, and Texas. This indicates that he can connect with recruits from vastly different areas. His deep ties to the state of Florida are essential for a program that sits in the state capital.
I hope all Florida State fans will join me in wishing Devin and his family a warm welcome back home in Tallahassee.
