FSU Transfer Portal News: Deante McCray Commits!
FSU lands productive Edge Rusher from Western Kentucky.
Florida State’s defense got some much- needed assistance today as Edge Rusher Deante McCray from Western Kentucky committed to the Seminoles. Jacksonville, Florida native McCray checks in a 6’4 283 pounds, and has many of the attributes that Defensive Coordinator Tony White likes for his scheme.
McCray is a good run defender according to Pro Football Focus. McCray graded out at 79.5 in this category. McCray is the type of player who can set the edge in the run game and not lose containment. Perhaps McCray’s greatest strength as a player is his tackling ability.
PFF reported that McCray’s tackling grade was 85 which is incredible. How did McCray get such a high score? He rarely misses tackles. Missed tackles have been a bone of contention at times between FSU fans and their defense. For the year, McCray only had a missed tackle rate of 3% which is awesome. If McCray is able to get his hands on an offensive skill player, more often than not, they are going to be brought down.
One of the weaknesses in McCray’s game seems to be pass rushing ability. He only graded out at 59.8 per PFF. I believe this could be an area of improvement for him under a new coaching staff. If Coach Knighton is able to bring his pass rushing ability up to where his run defense and tackling is, then FSU will be in business.
I think this is a good take for Florida State as they rebuild their defensive line following the dismissal of former DC Adam Fuller and the moving of legendary defensive line coach Odell Haggins into an off-field role. McCray fits what Florida State is looking for at many positions this transfer portal cycle.
McCray has been a productive player at Western Kentucky and may have more potential to unlock. The good news for the defensive coaching staff is they will have time to do so. McCray has two years of eligibility to use at his next stop.
Awesome job to the defensive coaching staff for filling a major need with a proven player.
