Top 5 Things I Learned
• DL | Josh Farmer & Ayo Tifase
It’s no secret that the defensive line is the strength of the defense and greatly improved through the transfer portal in a short amount of time particularly inside. The top name we heard from the coaches today thoughwas Joshua Farmer.
Farmer was forced into starter’s reps by the Louisville game last year and it never slowed down with injuries plagueing an already thin tackle rotation. He made bigtime strides between then and the bowl game but according to Coaches Norvell and Fuller he has doubled down and improved even more in the time since the bowl game.
Farmer has been dominant at times this spring and really shined in scrimmage number two showing off improvements accross the board especially with his power punch, all techniques, and stamina/consistancy. While his play has indeed been great the entire coaching staff is adament he is just scratching the surface and we will see more strides between now and September 3rd from the homegrown defensive tackle. The other name I’ve heard less from the coaches and more so from those in attendance is Ayobame Tifase.
He is essentially a redshirt freshman and being uneligible to play in 2022 has still never taken the field with his teammates. This may explain the quietness surrounding his camp performance. That aside I’m hearing that he is right there with Pat Payton, Darell Jackson and Josh Farmer dominating in scrimmage #2. He is finally starting to see his technique and motor begin to catch up with his freakish physical attributes. This guy will turn a whole bunch of heads April 15th and going forward.
Kentron Portier
The first week it was Darion Williamson, next up was Vandrevious Jacobs and this Saturday it was Kentron Portier’s turn to bask in the glow of public praise from his coaching staff. The former two have certain caveats attached to them and were somewhat calculated statements on the coaching staff’s behalf.
I don’t have this feeling whatsoever when it comes to Portier. It is my opinion that he began passing up Malik McClain and a few others in that room last season. He has all the physical tools to be successful along with a knack for getting open and some of the surest hands on the team. He was apparantly all over the field making plays this week and it carried right over into the scrimmage.
Tron’s value is not contained to just running routes, catching touchdowns and blocking for his teammates at wide out though he is great at it. A large part ofnhis growth at the WR position is attributed to his continued work and buyin for special teams. It brings to mind the old saying how you do one thing is how you do everything. According to everyone on the coaching staff he has been a demon on ST and steadily grown throughout the staffs time with the team and risen to an elite level as we head into the 2023 season.
Jordan Travis seperates himself
The coaches had planned to let Jordan run at least two or three series in today’s scrimmage but he came out and ran a flawless twelve play drive for a touchdown and that wrapped up his day. Think back to his breakout game versus LSU last year and the massive growth we saw in him as the true number one guy finally.
Everything I’m hearing out of camp and today’s scrimmage is that he has / is making a similar if not larger jump this offseason as a legitimate Heisman candidate. His faith and trust in his OL is growing rapidly and he is becoming a surgeon in the pocket making slick, small movements inside the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield. His amazing performance also left almost 40 first team reps for his backups after his single series.
I wish I could say all the same things about the other three quarterbacks but with everyone excited about the growth of Duffy and his battle with Tate Rodemaker, along with Brock Glenn fitting in immediately as a teammate and leader in his class it all pales in comparison to the greatness of JT13. Today’s scrimmage served as a reminder of just how large that gulf is and the Noles have a truly elite signal caller in Jordan Travis.
OL Growth continues, battle intensifying at center
Again a big part of the excellent play by Travis can be traced back to the wall of beef in front of him and his comfort amongst them. Shrader made his way back to practice and rising sophomore Julian Armella continues to work to rise in the ranks and improve his game.
The biggest conversation around the line though revolves around center. I’ve beem very clear that my best case scenario would be for our giant transfer, with 2000+ reps in CFB, Casey Roddick to win this job. According to the coaches and everyone that I’ve spoken to Maurice Smith is still steady Freddy and leading the group.
That said Roddick is in fact taking more and more reps at center and really beginning to show his potential. The other name that keeps coming up and I keep overlooking myself is Qae’Shonn Sapp. He has been developed in-house by Alex Atkins and is really pushing to win the starting job. His play continued to impress today and they even had Darius Washington back taking some snaps there. It is imperative for this line to improve at the center; the staff has recognized it and is pushing the guys to be better. Can Maurice do what’s necessary to improve the position or will Roddick or Sapp continue to grow right on past him and battle it out for the starting spot?
Jaheim Bell
The hype has been there since the day he first visited campus and exploded with his commitment alongside Kyle Morelock ( has played well but had an up and down week with some inconsistancy including a few drops in the scrimmage) and arriving on campus. The word around the team is that he has reached his comfort level and really beginning to take over that TE room.
All week and then after the scrimmage everyone I’ve heard from or spoken to today have said things like: he is dangerous, gonna take over, unstoppable and on and on. We have no idea how they are specifically using him with the offense and we won’t until they hit the field for that September 3rd showdown in Orlando. Just know that the hype is not unfounded and Bell is now becoming one of the guys and is totally comfortable within the team starting to become the natural leader that he is on the field.
